In my experience, gif motion when displayed in photoshop isn’t reliable and you need to upload the gif somewhere else to see how it will display. Also, different video sources will sometimes have more or fewer frames, so the best thing is always to eyeball it. The speed at which your gifs look normal will be different if you imported your video with only half of the frames vs 100% of the frames. The speed you’ll want to choose will depend on your video source. The best practice is to upload it to tumblr and check if the speed looks right to you and then adjust if you need to. Most times you’ll want all the frames of the gif to be the same speed but you might find exceptions to that. SPEED- When making gifs you have to choose a speed at which each frame of the gif is displayed in the animation. Using half frames gives you a smaller gif size which means higher gif quality and potentially longer gifs. But it will all depend on your source video quality, how long your gif will be, and how you adjust the different aspects of the images in the frames. Though with tumblr’s max gif size being 10 mb, it’s very easy to create gifs where you don’t have to leave out any of the frames. When you proceed with these options, it will create the animation with only the even frames of the video. – When you load the video file, you should either load it untouched (full frames) or check the box that says “limit to every _ frames” and enter a “2” in the box. The more frames in your video, the smoother the action will look. Typically you want to stick to full frames (100% of the original video frames) or half frames (importing every other frame from the video). You’ll need to decide how many frames from the video to import. IMPORTING VIDEO & FRAMES- If youre using Photoshop and the “import video frames to layers” tool, you’re importing a video that will be transformed into animation frames. I use Photoshop to make gifs, so these tips are with Photoshop in mind. These are a few things I use/try to adhere to when making gifs.
